Q.
What date will the transition from CCA to alternative wood preservatives
for non-industrial treated wood products occur?
A. The transition will occur over the next few months and will be completed
by December 31, 2003
Q. Industrial use products will continue to be treated with CCA. What
are considered examples of industrial use products?
A. Marine Timber and Piling

Structural/Agricultural Timbers & Poles
Shakes and Shingles
Highway Construction
Plywood Roof Decking

Q. After
the transition deadline date of December 31, 2003, can a treater or retailer
continue to sell existing inventories of CCA treated wood non-industrial
products?
A. There are no time limitations required by this action for the sale
of existing CCA treated inventories.
Q. After
the transition deadline date of December 31, 2003, can a treater continue
to treat non-industrial products with existing CCA work solution or concentrate?
A. No. Production of non-industrial products will cease on December 31,
2003.
Q. Is this
action an admission by the manufacturers of CCA preservatives used to
treat wood that CCA treated wood is somehow unsafe for humans?
A. No. Treaters stand by the safety and efficacy of all properly processed
CCA treated wood products.
Q. What
are the health risks associated with CCA pressure treated wood products?
A. When used as recommended, CCA treated wood is safe for human health
and the environment.
Q. Should
the general public be concerned about CCA treated wood in current structures
and surrounding soil?
A. No. The EPA has indicated that it does not believe there is any reason
to remove or replace CCA treated structures, including decks or playground
equipment. The EPA is not recommending that existing structures or surrounding
soils be removed or replaced.
